July 15 - Port Washington to Norwalk

We awoke to the sound of rain, heavy at times, as the weather readers like to say. The occasional showers promised for the day are here, and showing little signs of letting up.

At 9:15, the Town of North Hempstead patrol boat stopped by to kindly tell us that due to the weather, we would not be required to vacate the mooring at 9:00 as required by the new town rules. We thanked them, and hoped they didn't make the trip for us; we weren't going anywhere.

At just after noon, we left and sailed along with the brisk (15-20 Kn) breeze on a beam reach for Norwalk. The skies looked dismal enough, but we managed to escape all but a few of the showers.

Approaching Sheffield Island, which shelters the harbor from the southerly breezes, we hoped for the seas to calm a bit, as they had been hitting us with the occasional 3-4 footer which doused the deck, and us with spray. Needless to say, upon passing the head of the island, not only did we get the shelter we wanted, but the wind abated, and we were treated to a wonderfully calm evening.

Visited by friends, and my sister and nephew, we had a fine stay at Norwalk Cove Marina, and an interesting tour of the rapidly developing SoNo area.

That's Boatman at the right.
