Epilog

This last closing entry has been a long time in coming. We returned home on September 7, and here it is September 28. Summer is no officially over, and the weather has been Fall-like since our return. Of course, the rain has continued; not every day, but this surely has been a very wet year!

The other day, I went into West Marine to pick up a couple of things, and the displays all featured antifreeze and other end of season specials. This is like living a Zen koan: "What has an end, but no beginning?" Here, unfortunately, the answer is all too clear: "The sailing season of 2000."

We're still hoping for a couple of nice weekends to get out into the bay, though. This morning, it was dark when Marion's alarm rang, and it is becoming more difficult to make it home before the sun sets.

Daylight saving time ends in another month. That truly will be the end of the summer.

Personally, I like the extra evening light that daylight saving time brings. I'd be happy to see it last all year, and have double daylight saving time in the summer. Getting up in the dark is not a problem for me; I don't seem to see anything before lunch anyway. (See http://www.webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/index.html for a pretty good discussion of the history.)

We hope to extend the season with a trip to Annapolis for the boat show next week. Perhaps well post this trip as another cruise. We're also planning an off-road jaunt through the Pine Barrens, hoping that all the rain will not make this into a boating adventure.

That all said, we haven't completely given up on the summer. Yes, last weekend was devoted to a new round of bread baking, but all is not lost. I am still walking around without socks.
